We are delighted to announce that Anthony J. Luna joined southgate on January 1, 2026.
Anthony practices in the areas of M&A, VC, technology, and AI governance. He brings a dual perspective rarely found in the Japanese legal market, having served as the general counsel of a leading global IT company and M&A partner of a top-tier international firm.
Anthony joins southgate from IBM Japan, Ltd., where he served as Senior Operating Officer, Board Member, and General Counsel, overseeing all legal, IP, regulatory, and security functions and leading a department of approximately 45 legal professionals. While at IBM, Anthony garnered numerous awards from Chambers, Legal500, and ALB as a leading GC in Asia, as did the IBM legal department as a leading in-house team during Anthony’s tenure there.
Anthony began his legal career in Silicon Valley, representing emerging growth companies and venture investors. He then relocated to Tokyo, completed a secondment at Itochu, and became partner at Jones Day, where he represented large Japanese and international companies in cross-border acquisitions, joint ventures, strategic alliances, and commercial transactions.
Anthony teaches classes on AI and venture capital at Keio Law School.
